Today, as we mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPwD), we embrace the theme: “Amplifying Leadership by Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.”
Lenine Cunha: A Champion of Inclusion
Virtus Ambassador Lenine Cunha exemplifies this theme. As one of the most decorated athletes with an intellectual impairment, his achievements and advocacy continue to inspire many. His journey highlights the power of diverse leadership, opening doors for athletes with disabilities worldwide.
A Legendary Career
Lenine’s sports career is remarkable. He has won over 200 international medals, including a bronze at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. However, his influence extends beyond competition. As a Virtus Ambassador, he mentors athletes worldwide, sharing insights on resilience, competition, and personal growth.
Leading by Example
Leadership comes naturally to Lenine. Since 2006, he has captained the Portuguese team, providing motivational talks and practical guidance before competitions. In Portugal, he visits schools and universities to inspire young people, particularly those with disabilities.
Spreading Inspiration
“When I compete, I lead my team. With my experience, I support coaches, guide teammates, and set an example. I also speak to young people about my journey—overcoming meningitis, finding my way in sports, and dealing with bullying. I want them to believe they can overcome anything.”
Beyond Sports: A Mentor in the Workplace
Lenine’s leadership extends beyond sports. Working at Decathlon in Portugal, he is not a team leader but stands out as one of the top sellers. “I always give advice to my colleagues on selling techniques, and many follow in my footsteps.”
Through his dedication, Lenine Cunha continues to inspire, proving that leadership and perseverance can break barriers and create a more inclusive world.
